Biomechanical Assessment Podiatry

Pinnacle are one of Sydney’s leading providers of sports podiatry, offering a wide range of services including biomechanical assessment and gait analysis.

Biomechanics is the study of movement and related internal forces acting on tissue within the body, such as muscle, tendon and bone. A person’s unique walking and running gait, as well as standing posture, can play a significant role in how load is distributed within the body. By performing a biomechanical assessment and gait analysis, we are able to assess for any abnormalities that may be significantly contributing to pain, or predispose one to an injury.

At Pinnacle, we stay up-to-date with the latest evidence around biomechanics, and the link with injury or pain.  We understand and educate our patients that biomechanical factors are often not the “cause” of injuries. Rather than create anxiety around movement patterns or postures (i.e. knock knees or flat feet), we like to highlight the fact there is no ideal foot posture or movement pattern, but rather a range of normal limits. When someone falls outside of this normal range of lower limb biomechanics or foot posture, and there is pain, we are more confident in linking biomechanics as a possible contributing factor.

Irrespective of if biomechanical factors led to pain or not, we are often able to provide a solution to alter biomechanics to achieve a reduction in symptoms. This may include; footwear recommendations, shoe modification, strapping, prefabricated orthotics, custom orthotics, rehab plans and gait retraining.

At Pinnacle, we take pride in our proficiency in providing mechanical solutions that can have a positive impact on your biomechanics and alleviate pain. Whether you’re an athlete or someone who spends a lot of time on their feet, our expert foot podiatrist Sydney team can help you find the right solution for your specific needs.

Biomechanical Assessment with Pinnacle

During your biomechanical assessment, we will closely observe the movement of your hips, knees, ankles, feet and toes when weight-bearing and standing. Under the guidance of our podiatrists, functional activities will also be conducted to gain an insight into things such as range of motion, muscle strength, stability and flexibility. Obtaining a holistic understanding of how your lower half functions while walking or running is imperative in understanding possible contributing factors for any given injury and how we can provide effective treatment.

What’s Involved in Biomechanical Assessment?

Foot structure and biomechanics can play a significant role in the injury risk profile for an individual.

A biomechanical assessment involves a thorough physical exam looking at things such as; joint, muscle and ligament testing, specialised orthopaedic tests and gait analysis. As podiatrists, it’s essential that we evaluate how your foot function affects foot and ankle injury risk, as well as how this may relate to injuries of the entire lower limb. The information that we can gather from a biomechanical assessment helps us to create and deliver the most effective treatment for your pain, injuries or lower limb problems.
